Why hypnotherapy works — and why nothing else quite has

Your patterns aren't a character flaw. They're a ten-lane freeway.

Think of anxiety, self-doubt, or playing small as rush-hour traffic — loud, fast, impossible to escape. Traditional therapy often talks about the traffic. Hypnotherapy does something different.

Hypnotherapy is a guided therapeutic technique that uses deep relaxation and focused attention to enter a trance-like state.

As a certified hypnotherapist practicing effective hypnotherapy here in San Diego, I work directly with the subconscious mind — the part of you where those patterns actually live.

Hypnotherapy involves relaxing both the body and mind to facilitate emotional healing and create a safe space for transformation. Session by session, we place traffic cones in one lane at a time. Ten lanes down to nine. Then eight. The noise gets quieter. And while that’s happening, we build entirely new neural pathways — new roads — that become your default way of moving through the world.

Most clients feel a real shift within the first few sessions. Many notice something in their very first session. The changes tend to stick — because we’re not patching the surface. We’re working at the root. Hypnotherapy helps you access your internal resources within the subconscious, supporting personal transformation and lasting change.

And here's what that actually looks like:

"I certainly wasn't expecting the session to be so powerful and to get right to the cause of the issue."

— Michelle — hypnotherapy client

This isn't just about managing symptoms — it's about transforming the behaviors, beliefs, and emotional reactions that have been running the show. Whether you're here in San Diego, across Southern California, or joining online from anywhere in the world, this work meets you exactly where you are."

Two paths. One root. Both lead somewhere real.

Hypnotherapy is effective for anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, grief, addiction, weight loss, smoking cessation, phobias, fears, and performance enhancement. Regression hypnotherapy can also access the subconscious mind to uncover and heal unresolved childhood trauma.

Client stories:

Real people. Real results. In their own words.

Clients report meaningful shifts faster than they expect — often in the first session. Here's what that looks like across both paths.

For the Feel Better Fast path:

I tried different therapists, psychologists, other individual hypnotherapy, AEDP, Focusing, Mindfulness, self-talk to my inner child... finding ways to get rid of those images. After only one session with Jennifer, she helped me find the reasons behind my 40-year emotional disturbance. With Jennifer's patient and professional guidance, I felt safe and was able to touch my unconscious, hidden, forbidden — but true — feeling. It was like clearing all the dark clouds which covered the beautiful, sparkling, shining stars in the sky. The star is now able to see itself more clearly and shine on itself in the darkness.

Since I am a seasoned certified coach myself, I have high expectations of my coach. From my first coaching session, I knew Jennifer was the real thing. Her deep commitment, coupled with her integrity and the way she brings fun into the process, created an unparalleled coaching experience for me. My first one-day workshop resulted in a $33,248 day for me. Trust me — the best thing you can do for your business is run and claim Jennifer as your coach.

I've lived this. That's why it works.

I’m a Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (CCHt) certified through IACT and ICBCH — two of the most respected certifying bodies in clinical hypnotherapy. I am also a Visibility Mindset Coach with a background in public speaking and personal growth coaching.

Like many hypnotherapists in San Diego, I have specialized training and certifications in hypnotherapy; trauma & PTSD, depression, anxiety, stress, pain management, weight loss and more. Healing You Hypnotherapy provides mental health services through hypnotherapy and personal growth coaching. I’ve worked with 500+ clients across San Diego and virtually throughout California and beyond.

Here's what matters most: I've been where many of my clients are. Growing up in an environment marked by trauma and fear, I carried patterns of smallness and anxiety into my adult life and career — until a powerful hypnotherapy session changed everything. I felt free for the first time. That experience didn't just change my life. It redirected my entire career toward helping others do the same- easing emotional pain and creating a greater sense of inner peace.

I offer in-person sessions in Mission Valley, San Diego, and online sessions throughout California and all of North County San Diego. My practice is a supportive environment where you feel heard from the very first session — and where countless clients have broken free from patterns they thought were permanent.

Here's what a first session feels like, in a client's words:

"I was a little uncertain about trying hypnotherapy, but Jennifer quickly put me at ease.

With a voice like honey chamomile, every word guides you into a buoyant state of being. As I look back on my journey, I am reminded of the valuable insights I received from my inner guide. When I encounter challenges in my daily life, the gentle sound of that stream echoes in my mind, reminding me to keep things simple."

Hypnotherapy works at the level of deep-seated beliefs and emotional behaviors — the subconscious roots that quietly shape your relationships, your self-awareness, and your entire experience of daily life. As a practitioner offering both hypnotherapy and life coaching, I integrate mindfulness practices where helpful to support lasting change. In California, hypnotherapy is not state-licensed, but practitioners like me are certified through professional organizations such as IACT, ICBCH, and the National Guild of Hypnotists — I hold board certifications through IACT and ICBCH.

Serving people in-person in Mission Valley, and online throughout Southern California (La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad, North County San Diego) and beyond wherever internet is available.

Frequently asked questions

Is hypnotherapy safe? What does it actually feel like?

Completely safe — and nothing like what you've seen in movies or on stage. You're fully aware and in control the entire time. Most people describe it as a deeply relaxed, focused state — like guided meditation, but with a specific goal. You cannot be made to do or say anything against your will. Clinical hypnotherapy, including all the hypnotherapy techniques I use in my San Diego practice, is gentle, evidence-based, and deeply collaborative. You are always the one in the driver's seat.

What does it feel like to be hypnotized? Will I lose control?

You won't lose control — not even a little. This is the biggest misconception about hypnotherapy, and it's understandable given what you've seen in movies or stage shows. Clinical hypnotherapy is nothing like that. In a session with me, you remain fully aware, fully able to speak, and fully able to end the session at any point. Most people describe it as the most deeply relaxed they've felt in years — like guided meditation with a specific destination. Some people feel warmth, tingling, or a sense of pleasant heaviness. Some feel very light. What's consistent is a heightened sense of inner focus — like the volume of your busy mind turns down, and you can finally hear what's underneath. You're always the one in the driver's seat.

How is this different from talk therapy or psychotherapy?

Traditional therapy and psychotherapy are valuable — but they primarily work with the conscious mind, which drives roughly 10% of your behavior, beliefs, and emotional patterns. The other 90% is the subconscious — and that's where hypnotherapy works. Unlike a traditional therapist, I'm not asking you to analyze your limiting beliefs endlessly. We go directly to where those patterns live and transform them there. Most clients experience more meaningful shifts in a handful of sessions than in months of talk therapy — not a criticism of therapy, simply a different level of access.

What actually happens during a hypnotherapy session? Walk me through it.

Every session starts with a real conversation — I want to understand what you're carrying, where you feel stuck, and what you're hoping to shift. From there, I guide you into a deeply relaxed, focused state. You're not asleep, not unconscious, and absolutely not under anyone's control. You're more like... deeply tuned in. In that state, we work directly with the subconscious — the part of you where your patterns, beliefs, and emotional reactions actually live. Depending on what you need, that might look like guided imagery, parts work, regression to an earlier experience, or building new neural associations. At the end, you come back to full alertness gradually and we integrate what happened. Most people describe the experience as profoundly relaxing — and are surprised by how much shifts in a single session.

How many sessions will I need? Do you offer a free consultation?

Most clients notice real, tangible shifts within one to three sessions. Many notice something shift in their very first session. Deeper pattern work typically takes a handful of sessions for lasting change. I offer a free 45-minute strategy session — either Feel Better Fast or Stop Playing Small — as your starting point. This is not a sales call. It's a real session where something actually happens. You leave with a clear sense of what's possible and exactly what the next step looks like.

Do you offer in-person and online sessions? Where are you located?

Yes to both. In-person hypnotherapy sessions are available in Mission Valley, San Diego (8885 Rio San Diego Drive, Suite 237 — easy access from La Jolla, Del Mar, Hillcrest, and North County San Diego). Online sessions via Zoom are available throughout California and beyond. Virtual sessions are just as effective as in-person — research has confirmed this. Wherever you are, if you're ready to break free from what's been holding you back, we can work together.

What is regression hypnotherapy, and do you use it?

Regression hypnotherapy is a technique that guides you back — gently and safely — to an earlier experience or memory that may be at the root of a current pattern. It's not about reliving trauma. It's about visiting it from a resourced, adult perspective so the emotional charge can finally release. Think of it less like rewinding a tape and more like sending your older, wiser self back to comfort a younger version of you. I use regression work when it's clinically appropriate — it can be remarkably effective for trauma, PTSD, deep-rooted limiting beliefs, and patterns that haven't responded to other approaches.

Can hypnotherapy help with pain management?

Yes — and there's solid research behind this. Hypnotherapy can literally alter the brain's perception of pain intensity. It doesn't eliminate the sensation the way medication does, but it changes your relationship to it — the emotional weight, the bracing, the dread that often amplifies physical pain. I work with clients managing chronic pain, fibromyalgia, migraines, and pain related to medical conditions or procedures. If you're dealing with ongoing physical pain and want to explore what's possible without adding another prescription to the mix, this is worth a conversation.

Can hypnotherapy help with weight loss? What is the Virtual Weight Loss Jab?

Yes — and unlike diets or willpower-based approaches, hypnotherapy addresses the part of you that actually drives your eating habits: the subconscious mind.

My weight loss work includes a specialized program called the Virtual Weight Loss Jab — a natural, side-effect-free alternative to pharmaceutical injections like Wegovy or Ozempic. Rather than chemically suppressing appetite, this hypnosis program works by reprogramming the subconscious patterns that drive overeating in the first place.

Through a series of specialized sessions, the Virtual Weight Loss Jab helps you:

* Regulate portion sizes naturally — your perception of "enough" resets from the inside out

* Reduce cravings for processed and unhealthy foods — and genuinely increase your preference for nourishing ones

* Suppress appetite subconsciously — without synthetic suppressants or side effects

* Boost motivation for movement — by reconnecting you to how good it feels to be in your body

* Distinguish physical hunger from emotional eating — one of the most powerful shifts my clients report

* Develop an inner coach — a daily internal voice of encouragement that keeps you consistent between sessions

This isn't a crash program or a quick fix dressed up in new language. It's a mindset and lifestyle reset at the subconscious level — which is the only level where the changes actually stick. If you've tried Ozempic or Wegovy and want to keep the results without the jab, or you want a natural path first, this is worth a conversation.

Can hypnotherapy help with addiction and substance use?

Yes — and here's why it works where willpower alone often doesn't: addiction isn't primarily a logical problem. It's a subconscious pattern — a coping mechanism that was once useful and got stuck. Talking about why you drink, smoke, or use doesn't change the pull you feel at 9pm. Going directly to the subconscious trigger does.

I work with clients on smoking cessation, alcohol dependency, and recovery support alongside other treatment. We identify what the behavior is actually doing for you — the emotion it's numbing, the need it's meeting, the old belief underneath it — and we work at that level. That's where lasting change happens. Hypnotherapy for addiction works best as part of a broader support system, and I'm transparent about that from the start.

Will I learn self-hypnosis? What do I take home from sessions?

Often, yes. Depending on what we're working on, I teach clients simple self-hypnosis and anchoring techniques they can use between sessions — tools to calm the nervous system, interrupt old patterns in real time, or reinforce the shifts we're making together. The goal is never dependency on me. The goal is that you leave more resourced than you arrived — with new internal tools that are yours to keep. The changes we create in session tend to compound over time, especially when you're reinforcing them daily. Additionally, after each session, I send via email a summary of the journey, discoveries, transformation and tools discussed during the session.

How is Healing You Hypnotherapy different from other hypnotherapy practices in San Diego?

A few things set this practice apart. First, I work at the intersection of two worlds — clinical hypnotherapy for mental health and subconscious-level coaching for professional growth — which means I can support the whole person, not just one slice of your experience. Second, my approach is deeply rooted in Ericksonian hypnotherapy and therapeutic metaphor work, which tends to be gentler and more effective than direct suggestion alone. Third, I've lived this. The transformation I help clients create is one I've experienced personally — and that changes how I hold space for the work. You're not talking to someone who read about this in a textbook.

Here's something else you won't find everywhere: after each session, I send you a personal email summary — the powerful moments, the shifts that happened, the tools and insights you can take into your week. So nothing gets lost. You leave the session with the experience; you leave with the email knowing exactly what to do with it. And finally, I offer a genuine free strategy session — not a sales pitch, an actual session where something real happens before you commit to anything.

Do I need a referral from a physician to work with you?

No referral needed. You can book directly — a free strategy session is your starting point, and we go from there. In California, hypnotherapy is not state-licensed, which means you don't need a doctor's note to access this work. That said, if you're managing a diagnosed medical or psychiatric condition, I always encourage you to keep your healthcare team in the loop. Hypnotherapy works beautifully alongside traditional care — it's not a replacement for it, and I'm transparent about that from the start.

Is hypnotherapy licensed in California? What are your credentials?

California doesn't offer a state license for hypnotherapy — but that doesn't mean the field is unregulated. Professional certification through respected bodies is the standard, and it's what separates clinical hypnotherapy from entertainment hypnosis. I hold board certifications through IACT (International Association of Counselors and Therapists) and ICBCH (International Certification Board of Clinical Hypnotherapy) — two of the most respected credentialing organizations in the field. I also have specialized training in trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, pain management, and weight loss. Credentials matter. Ask anyone you're considering working with.
