Sarah's Story: From Pretending to Truly Living

Sarah's Story: From Pretending to Truly Living

Sarah scrolled through Instagram at 2 AM, looking at everyone else's perfect lives while tears ran down her face. On the outside, she had it all—the career, the family, the house in a nice San Diego neighborhood. But inside? She felt hollow. Empty. Like she was watching her own life through foggy glass, unable to actually feel any of it.

During the day, she'd paste on that smile, crack jokes in meetings, and tell everyone "I'm fine!" when they asked. But at night, lying awake, she'd think: Everyone else has it figured out. Why can't I? What's wrong with me?

Deep down, Sarah believed her past had sealed her fate—the criticism she'd internalized as a kid, the failures she couldn't let go of, the belief that she'd never really be enough. She figured this was just her life now: going through the motions, pretending to be okay, accepting that maybe joy and peace just weren't meant for her.

She'd tried everything she could think of—therapy that helped her understand her problems but not actually solve them, medications that numbed her without healing anything, books and apps that offered temporary inspiration before reality crashed back in. Nothing changed the core of how she felt.

Then, almost by accident, she found herself in her first hypnosis session.

She didn't expect much—just another thing that probably wouldn't work. But something shifted. For the first time in years, she felt lighter. Not fixed, not perfect, but... different. Like someone had finally reached that deep place where all the heaviness lived and started untangling it.

Over the next several sessions, combined with the self-hypnosis recordings I gave her and a willingness to give herself grace when dark days still showed up, Sarah started rebuilding from the inside out. She learned she could actually pull herself out of those dark moments instead of drowning in them.

The light days came more often. The joy felt more real. And slowly, steadily, she discovered something she'd stopped believing was possible: she could feel genuinely good again.

If you're reading this feeling like Sarah did—like you're broken, like everyone else has the manual to life except you, like maybe you're just destined to feel this way forever—I want you to know something: your past doesn't have to determine your future. And you don't have to keep pretending everything's fine when it's not. There's another way, and it might be simpler than you think.

What Is Hypnotherapy and How Does It Work?

woman wondering if hypnotherapy can help her with depression

To start with, guided hypnotic therapy and subconscious repatterning is a lot like meditation with a goal—or more precisely, it's like having a very relaxed conversation with your eyes closed. It's an outpatient treatment, done either virtually or in-person (but I do not do inpatient treatment). It can be used to help with depression, anxiety, PTSD/trauma, pain management and other mental health challenges.

Did you know that about 10% of who you are and what you do on a day-to-day basis (including feeling depressed) comes from your conscious mind, and 90% of who you are and what you do is driven by your subconscious mind? It's true! So if that's the case, then the memories, beliefs and behaviors that drive you (and me!) lie in our subconscious minds. That includes all of the memories, persistent sad thought-loops, mindsets and behaviors that lead to depression and have such a big hold on people. (No wonder there's a mental health epidemic in this world!) It really is what has the greatest effect on our overall emotional wellness. Shifting core assumptions is central to the recovery process, as these perspectives influence emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Recognizing the truth about your experiences and emotions is also a key part of subconscious work and transformation.

What I do, as a hypnotherapist, is help you relax down to your subconscious mind (while you remain fully aware and fully in control) and help get rid of those depressing superhighway thought loops (no judgment here—we all have some of these!) and replace them with empowering thoughts, inner narratives that uplift. This not some kind of "Just be positive!" treatment. "Just-being-positive" doesn't change a traumatic past, and while I can't change your past, I can help you to change the way it affects you. We make this transformation together by showing your body and mind that (1) you can handle what comes your way, (2) you're more-powerful and capable than what your subconscious mind has been telling you for quite some time, (3) you can decide and choose control a lot of your present day mental health set yourself up for a better tomorrow.

I shrink down the gravity and enormity of these negative superhighways driving your mind, and increase (or lay anew) thought-loop super-highways that serve you better. For example—I start laying more superhighways in your brain of optimistic thoughts, empowered thoughts, grateful thoughts, thoughts that allow you to appreciate yourself and your accomplishments (I know—you probably don't let yourself acknowledge how far you have come, and I'm gonna help you change that!). And then, the more I shrink down the impact of those negative thought-loops and previously-automatic behaviors that reinforce depression, the quicker you overcome depression, and the quicker your overall psychological well-being improves. Hypnotherapy is not a band-aid solution; it's designed to create lasting change and real change by addressing the root causes of depression and emotional pain.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

To be straightforward, I don't have an exact answer here, because everyone's a little bit different. However, what I've found is that people typically experience a drastic improvement after just a few sessions. After 6 sessions or so, people are generally feeling much better, and asking to focus on other topics (including decreasing anxiety, increasing self-esteem, improving focus or the ability to learn, getting better at attracting wealth, improving relationships and more). Many clients have found relief from depression after trying guided subconscious mind work, reporting benefits such as improved mood, more peace, and a better quality of life. Sessions are designed to facilitate positive change and support successful outcomes in emotional and relational well-being.

Again, everybody's journey is a little different, especially when it comes to treating depression and replacing it with hope, optimism, joy, ambition and living a fuller life. Self-discovery is an important part of this transformation journey, helping you understand yourself and overcome inner barriers.

Typically, initial sessions last around 90 minutes, so that I can get some more details about how depression is over-powering your life, what other psychological challenges might be affecting you, and how you want to feel instead. Then, I'm going to give you some very powerful tools to keep improving how you feel (and reducing feelings of depression) after you finish your sessions with me. Next, I do some very powerful work through this guided hypnotic therapy. Most of my clients report feeling so much better after the first session! Then, in sessions 2-6, the transformation is deepened and multiplied, and a stronger sense of self is created.

I've had people report that they've spent $10,000s on other therapists, for years, and improved their emotional state only a little. And then, after just a few sessions of doing hypnotherapy with me, they report feeling their depression lift (this often happens when they came to me for a different issue—wellness-related or otherwise—to start with!) and their lives starting to feel much better!

Healing You Hypnotherapy San Diego has helped many clients address issues directly and indirectly related to depression, and found their overall happiness, optimism and functioning to rise quite a bit. My clients benefit from tailored guided trance work sessions and personalized care that addresses their unique needs.

Understanding Major Depressive Disorder

Listen, major depressive disorder—let's call it MDD—isn't just having a rough week or feeling bummed out after a bad day. I'm talking about something much deeper here, and if this resonates with you, you're not alone in this. It shows up as that persistent heaviness in your chest, when things you used to love just don't spark joy anymore, and when your energy feels like it's been completely zapped—affecting everything from your relationships to your work to how you see yourself.

Here's the thing: MDD doesn't discriminate, and it's not your fault—it can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time, usually because of a perfect storm of genetics, biology, life circumstances, and how your mind processes stress. The good news? If you're in San Diego, there are some incredible specialized treatment centers that get it and offer real, effective approaches to help you reclaim your life and feel like yourself again. And hey, if conventional therapy and medication haven't given you the relief you deserve—what doctors call treatment-resistant depression—there are innovative options like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or hypnotherapy that might just be the breakthrough you've been looking for. Understanding that depression is complex isn't about making excuses—it's about giving yourself permission to seek the right help, trust the process, and step into a future where you feel strong and purposeful again.

Major Depression Treatment

Listen, major depression isn't something to mess around with—it's serious, it's real, and it deserves serious attention and care. If you're dealing with major depressive disorder, you might be working with a psychiatrist for diagnosis and medication, and that's totally okay—I can work right alongside your existing care team to supercharge your results.

What makes guided hypnosis so powerful for major depression is that it gets right to the root of those thought patterns and mindsets that keep you trapped in that heavy fog.

Whether you're battling persistent sadness, lost interest in everything you once loved, or feeling completely disconnected from life itself, this work can help rewire those neural pathways and restore your capacity for hope, purpose, and genuine joy again.

Even if you have major depression, it can be highly treatable with the right approach. And thankfully, the stigma around psychological struggles is decreasing as these conditions are increasingly recognized as illnesses that can and should be treated (instead of being a flaw of a person). If you have a major depressive disorder, you may want to get diagnosed by a psychiatrist first. Again, while I am not a psychiatrist and I do not diagnose disorders or illnesses, I am recognized as a professional by IACT (International Association of Counselors and Therapists) and have had significant success in treating depression stemming from different sources and related psychological issues. I offer specialized treatment programs for depression, ensuring that each client receives the most effective care possible.

Treatment-Resistant Depression

You know what? If you've been to therapist after therapist, tried medication after medication, and still feel like you're stuck in that same dark place—that's what doctors call treatment-resistant depression, and honestly, it can feel incredibly frustrating.

But here's what I want you to know: just because conventional approaches haven't worked doesn't mean nothing will work for you. Sometimes your brain needs a different pathway to transformation, and that's exactly where hypnotic therapy comes in—by accessing your subconscious mind, I can work around those blocks that kept other treatments from breaking through.

Think of it like this: if the front door's locked, I'm going to find the window that opens, and get you the relief you've been searching for all along.

Traditional Therapy

Look, I have nothing but respect for conventional talk therapy—it helps millions of people with mental health challenges, and if it's working for you, that's fantastic! But here's the reality: sometimes sitting on a couch talking about your problems week after week can feel like you're going in circles, especially when you're dealing with depression that's rooted deep in your subconscious programming.

Traditional approaches typically focus on your conscious mind—understanding your thoughts, processing your emotions, talking through your experiences—and while that's valuable, it's only accessing about 10% of what's actually driving your feelings and behaviors.

That's where hypnotherapy shines—it goes straight to that other 90%, the subconscious part that's actually running the show, so you can make changes faster and feel relief sooner without spending years unpacking every single detail of your past.

Common Issues in Depression

Listen, depression shows up differently for everyone, but here's the thing—you're definitely not alone in what you're experiencing. Those early morning wake-ups when you'd rather stay buried under the covers, the way your appetite goes completely sideways, or how your stomach seems to be in constant knots? Yeah, that's depression messing with your body, and it's way more common than you might think. Emotionally, you might find yourself wrestling with anxiety that feels like it's running the show, or that bone-deep exhaustion that makes even brushing your teeth feel like climbing Mount Everest—and that crushing sense of hopelessness? It's okay, I've seen it before.

Depression loves to crash the party when life throws you curveballs—difficult relationships, traumatic stuff, major changes—and suddenly you're pulling back from people, your motivation has left the building, and focusing feels impossible. But here's what I want you to know: working through this with talk therapy, hypnotherapy, or whatever feels right for you can be a total game-changer for developing real, practical tools that actually work. When you team up with someone who truly gets it, you start understanding your own unique puzzle pieces and taking those meaningful steps toward feeling like yourself again—because you absolutely can, and you absolutely will.

Depression can be more than feeling sad. Depressive disorders can cause emptiness and sometimes unexplainable feelings that can affect our outlook on the world.

Are you ever unsure of your purpose or lose hope when you get up in the mornings?

Are you often sad and feel like you're losing the joy of everyday life?

Are you struggling to fall asleep and finding it difficult to get up from "a funk" or "a deep sleep"?

Although symptoms of depression may vary depending on the person, many people feel like they aren't in charge of their emotions. Guided hypnosis can help you rewire your brain to feel more confident, lovable and motivated.

Depression can cause you to lose interest in things you once enjoyed and leave you feeling anxious. Depression can sometimes manifest as physical symptoms such as being tired all the time, feeling drained, having no appetite, sex drive, or other aches and pains.

You can use this approach to rewire your anxious feelings to calm down, take control and feel at ease (even if you have severe depression; although certainly it may take more time then).

My depression treatment can help you rewire and change your mindset and outlook towards self-worth. Hypnosis reaches the root cause of depression that your conscious mind can't access.

Break Free

Imagine waking up one morning and realizing that heavy weight that's been pressing on your chest for months (or years) has actually lifted—that's what breaking free from depression feels like, and it's absolutely possible for you. When you transform what's in your subconscious mind, you're not just managing symptoms or white-knuckling your way through each day—you're genuinely experiencing lightness, spontaneous laughter, authentic connection with others, and rediscovering that spark you thought was gone forever.

Through subconscious repatterning, I'm literally dismantling those old superhighways of negative thoughts and building brand new pathways of optimism, gratitude, self-compassion, and resilience in their place. And here's the beautiful part: once you transform what's in your subconscious, you'll have the tools and the internal strength to keep yourself free, creating a life that feels expansive, purposeful, and genuinely worth living again.

My depression treatment can help you tap into your potential by training your mind to stop uttering negative and critical words. I'll then help you replace them with positive, powerful, and uplifting thoughts. Your mind becomes more open to possibilities when you're in hypnosis.

It's not uncommon for depression to leave you feeling overwhelmed and unworthy. Overcoming depression helps you embrace acceptance and conviction that your abilities are enough, and that you are enough. Imagine early morning awakening with hope, confidence and excitement about the day!

Try guided hypnosis for 6 sessions, and then use the self-hypnosis (that I'll teach you) in between. People begin to see results in the next 21 days. Listening to the audio more often will help you break free from the fog and allow you to lift your head.

You'll find that you can believe in yourself enough to be in control of your emotions, and take back your power.

Lasting Change

You know what's exhausting? Trying quick fixes that make you feel better for a hot minute, only to crash right back into persistent sadness and depression a few weeks later. Real, lasting change doesn't come from band-aid solutions or surface-level adjustments—it comes from fundamentally shifting the core beliefs and automatic patterns that have been keeping you stuck; shifting the mood/ feelings that previously controlled your days .

That's exactly what I'm creating with you in my sessions: deep, permanent transformation at the subconscious level that sticks with you long after your work with me is done. When you invest in this kind of profound inner work, you're not just temporarily managing depression—you're rewiring your entire relationship with yourself, your emotions, and your life in ways that compound over time and keep getting better.

And the best part?

Once those new neural pathways are established and those empowering convictions about yourself are locked in, they become your new normal—so you can live freely, confidently, and authentically without constantly fighting against your own mind.

I'll use both guided hypnosis and teach you self-hypnosis techniques. I recommend creating a recording of this guided hypnosis (or I can create a custom recording for you) in order to improve your results.

Relax and listen to your personalized audio repeatedly until you notice:

You develop a deep confidence, contentment, and control over your emotions.

You find more joy, ease and bliss

You feel a shift in energy and a greater awareness that you are worthy and sufficient

It's amazing to be able to transform your body and mind with self-hypnosis. Change your reality.

Creating a Personalized Treatment Plan

Here's the thing about depression—no two journeys are exactly alike, which is why cookie-cutter approaches just don't cut it. Listen, when you're working with a professional here in San Diego, they're going to take the time to really get you—your unique situation, what you're dealing with, and where you want to go. Your treatment might include medication, therapy, energy psychology, or guided hypnosis (or a mix of all of them)—whatever feels right for breaking free from those stubborn patterns that keep you stuck in the same place.

Here's what I want you to know: by focusing on building real coping skills, discovering who you actually are, and creating genuine positive change, you can develop a stronger awareness of yourself and find lasting relief from depression's grip.

And listen up—with the right support team, transformation isn't just possible, it's totally doable, and you can move forward with more confidence, authenticity, and peace in your life. Whether you're ready to address past stuff, manage what's happening right now, or simply want to find more joy in those everyday moments, a personalized approach means your treatment actually fits you—not some generic version of you.

At Healing You Hypnotherapy, I serve both adults and children, offering subconscious repatterning for depression tailored to the unique needs of each group. For adults, sessions may focus on treatment-resistant depression, while for children, I address developmental or emotional challenges in a supportive environment.

My approach is rooted in compassion, ensuring that every person feels safe, understood, and genuinely cared for throughout their transformation process. I provide personalized care, tailoring each session to the individual's needs, and utilize a holistic approach that may include energy psychology and psychotherapy alongside hypnotherapy.

My comprehensive range of treatments and therapeutic modalities is designed to help clients overcome their struggle with depression, trauma, and related issues, supporting real change and lasting transformation.

Virtual Sessions: Effective and Convenient

Great question!

Prior to the pandemic, most hypnosis work happened in-person. However, when lockdowns started becoming a mandate and the world was doing what it could to slow the spread of Covid, I started doing all therapeutic hypnosis via phone and/or via video conference. Also, the awareness of psychological wellness became greater and recognized as being more common (and "more okay" to seek depression treatment). And do you know what I found?

It's just as effective as in-person guided hypnosis in reducing feelings of depression, and helping people to overcome depression! And I'm not the only one who found this to be true! It's also just as effective at improving overall emotional wellness! I now offer online sessions, providing flexibility and ensuring that people can access effective treatments from anywhere.

Now that the world's "opened up," I continue to offer therapeutic hypnosis sessions via phone or video chat, as well as in-person. I currently do sessions in person in Mission Valley, Sorrento Valley (closest to La Jolla) and in Carlsbad for the greater San Diego CA area.

One of the great parts of conducting sessions over the phone or via video chat is that:

I can serve anyone, anywhere!

You don't have to drive to come to me

You can show up to a session in a ball gown, or pajamas, or anything in between!

(Support dog or cat-on-the-keyboard is optional).

Depression and Substance Abuse

Not surprisingly, many studies show that most people with substance abuse issues—drugs or alcohol—have underlying psychological mental health issues. This includes things like depression and anxiety. Please note that, I am not a substance abuse clinic and do not treat substance abuse directly. However, because I successfully treat depression, anxiety and similar challenges, this often (in turn) helps with substance abuse.

Subconscious repatterning can also support people struggling with addiction by addressing the underlying emotional and behavioral patterns that contribute to addictive behaviors. Please note—if you have a serious substance abuse issue, I still recommend you work with a facility that specifically treats substance abuse issues and/or one of the very fine residential treatment centers in or near San Diego.

You can get serious help with treating depression through outpatient treatment (again, I do not do inpatient treatment) and other psychological challenges through hypnotherapy. Just fill out the form or give me a call to find out more!

Understanding Depression

Depression is commonly defined as feelings of sadness, having a depressed mood, and a noticeable loss of interest or continued pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed. It can include changes in appetite, trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, loss of energy, foggy thinking and overall loss of motivation. It can be triggered and magnified by many factors.

FAQ image

Can Depression Be Treated?

Yes, absolutely.

Depression stems from both psychological and physiological factors, and it can be treated. For some, healing may be gradual and may take time, but you can make noticeable progress with a few key steps. Therapy such as hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy make a big difference. The right therapy helps a person with depression to understand the source(s) of depression, and address those issues by reframing them in a healthier way.

When you reframe and heal issues at the subconscious level, the healing goes deeper and lasts longer. Environmental and physiological factors also contribute to (and can exacerbate) feelings of depression. By addressing these factors, as well by getting help from a trained therapist, you can experience remarkable relief. For some people, medication like anti-depressants can help. Anti-depressants aren't for everybody and sometimes come with side-affects, so check with a psychiatrist to see if they're right for you.

FAQ image

How does hypnotherapy help identify and release stored emotions and experiences?

Imagine a wonderful journey of the mind- like a movie that you and your hypnotherapist co-write. The hypnotherapist expertly guides you into the theta state of mind (i.e. very relaxed, but not asleep) and helps you find the experiences, thoughts & feelings that are not serving you (kind of like an adventure movie). Your hypnotherapist then works to put new context and meaning around these old experiences, and helps you to release them, or transform them into healthy and helpful thoughts, feelings and emotions.

FAQ image

How Can Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Help Heal Depression?

Yes, hypnotherapy is wonderful at helping to heal and dramatically decrease depression.

Most people who come to me who experience feelings of depression feel noticeably better after the first session, and dramatically better after just a few sessions. Often, people are shocked at much they process and address in the first session, and how they not only start feeling happier, but also find themselves doing more things to live a richer life after a few sessions.

A study conducted by Alfred A. Barrios, Ph.D., surveyed scientific literature, where he compared recovery rates for various types of therapy. He found that hypnotherapy had a 93% recovery rate after an average of 6 sessions. This was compared to a 38% recovery rate after approximately 600 sessions for psychoanalysis and a 72% recovery rate after an average of 22 sessions for behavior therapy. The study was titled "Hypnotherapy: A Reappraisal" and was published in Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice.

If you're curious, and you'd like to experience the relief and rise in motivation plus overall contentment that people who've sought out hypnotherapy have experienced, then give it a try! I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about this.

FAQ image

Why is it important to release the unresolved feelings as soon as possible after the triggering event?

It is important to release the unresolved feelings as soon as possible after the triggering event because if left unaddressed, they can become deeply buried and contribute to ongoing depression. Releasing these feelings allows for healing, prevents them from manifesting as self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors, and makes room for healthy growth!

FAQ image

What happens if the unresolved feelings are not released?

If the unresolved feelings are not released, they continue to be deeply buried- within the subconscious mind- numbed and ignored by different factors. While the unresolved feelings are "numbed" or buried, it does not mean that they're not affecting you; chances are, they are leading to self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors. As the unresolved feelings continue to ruminate and cycle continuously through your mind, it can contribute to ongoing depression.

FAQ image

How do these unresolved feelings become deeply buried beneath the numbness caused by anti-depressant drugs, addictive behaviors, and repression?

These unresolved feelings become deeply buried beneath the numbness created by anti-depressant drugs, addictive behaviors (think: binge-watching tv or social media; over-spending; drinking, drugs etc.), and repression when they are not released or addressed. The use of anti-depressant drugs, addictive behaviors, and repression further contributes to the suppression of these emotions.

FAQ image

How does hypnotherapy remove the underlying basis of depression and help transform unresolved thoughts and experiences into something more-helpful?

Hypnotherapy removes the underlying basis of depression by addressing and releasing the stored unhealthy emotions and unresolved feelings. Through the process of hypnotherapy, these emotions and feelings are brought to the surface and processed & transformed into something that serves you better. This then allows for resolution of past issues, dramatic relief from depression, and makes both space and foundation for upbeat feelings like hope, overall contentment and a further zest for life..

Understanding Depression: It's More Than Sadness

I know—depression sucks, especially severe depression! It's like this heavy fog that weighs down your mind, body and—seemingly—your soul. The emotional pain caused by depression can be overwhelming, but guided hypnosis can help alleviate this pain and restore hope.

When you're in the middle of it, it's hard to see a way out.

But I assure you—you can get out of it, decrease it, and stop it from being a controlling factor in your life.

Clinical hypnosis—a guided form of hypnosis—is a wonderful depression treatment that can help decrease depression dramatically.

You can "overcome depression" by restoring and instilling inner feelings of self-worth and happiness at the subconscious level.

In one of the hypnotherapist sessions, we work with my inner child. I take life too seriously. I get angry about everything. Now, after only three sessions with Jennifer, I am now less reactive to my environment. Now, I have trouble getting angry.

Also,...

I am more playful now!

Yesterday....previously I would have gotten angry, and that anger probably would have stayed with me for a couple of days. This time, it didn’t bother me. I didn’t get angry. I can probably keep writing about how Jennifer has helped me with hypnosis, but I don’t have enough space…

Margaret:

You asked me what results I've noticed...  That

deep dark heavy weight in my chest and abdomen is gone

,

depression is lifted...

Thank you for helping me reach this spot.

Lotus:

l tried different therapists, psychologists, other private individual hypnotherapy

, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Focusing, Whole Body Focusing, Mindfulness, Self-talk to my inner child.......finding ways to get rid of those images, because l knew that image was affecting me, but, it just came out in my head whenever l felt lonely or sadness...

After having only one hypnotherapy session with Jennifer

, she helped me realize or find out reasons

behind my 40+ year emotional disturbance, such as feelings of loneliness, sadness, wanting to be loved, wanting to be cherished, wanting others' compliments, anger towards males, self-doubt, self-hatred.....

… With Jennifer patiently and professionally guiding me in the hypnotherapy session, l felt safe and was able to touch my unconscious / hidden / forbidden but true feeling.

It was like clearing all the dark clouds

which covered the beautiful, sparkling and shinning stars in the sky.

The star

is now able to see itself much more clearly and

can shine on itself in the darkness.

It really helps me figure out a way out after being hurt, suffered and maltreated...

l am so grateful for Jennifer's professional leading, patiently accompanying, deeply understanding of my feelings, empathetic encouragement and non-judgmental attitude.

l felt safe and accompaniment from Jennifer's professional leading, kind-hearted and generosity.

Michelle:

"I certainly

wasn't expecting the (first) session to be so powerful

and to get right to the cause of the issue, I'm sure there are many more 😅

This was really an amazing experience

and I appreciate your expertise and kind, positive spirit..."
