How Hypnotherapy Works

Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or trauma — or you're a high-achieving professional who's tired of playing small — this is where change actually happens. Even if you're still healing.

How Hypnotherapy Works:

Let's start with what hypnotherapy is not.

It's not losing control. It's not being unconscious. It's not someone swinging a pocket watch at you while you helplessly reveal your deepest secrets. And it is definitely not making you do embarrassing things on a stage. (That's stage hypnosis — a completely different animal, and honestly, not my vibe.)

Here's what it actually is: a deeply relaxed, highly focused state — something like a guided meditation, but with a very specific goal. In that state, your conscious mind steps back just enough to allow access to the subconscious, where your automatic patterns, emotional responses, and deeply held beliefs actually live. You're always fully aware. You're always in control. You just feel very, very relaxed.

Most people describe their first session as one of the most peaceful experiences they've had in years. A few are surprised it worked at all — which, honestly, is one of my favorite reactions.

Why the conscious mind isn't running the show

Here's something most people don't know: roughly 90% of your daily thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are driven by your subconscious mind — not your conscious choices.

Your conscious mind is the part that reads this sentence, sets intentions, and decides to go to the gym. Your subconscious is the part that actually determines whether you feel safe, worthy, calm, or capable in any given moment. It's the part that runs the automatic programs — the patterns you've had since childhood, the responses that happen before you even have a chance to think.

So when anxiety keeps coming back no matter how many times you've tried to push through it — that's not a willpower problem. That's a subconscious pattern that conscious tools simply can't reach. It's like trying to update an app while the operating system hasn't been patched. The app isn't the problem. The underlying program is.

That's where hypnotherapy works. Not on the 10%. On the 90%.

The freeway in your mind

Think of the anxiety, the self-doubt, the patterns that keep showing up — they're like a ten-lane freeway of noise running through your mind. Loud, fast, constant.

Affirmations and mindset work are essentially trying to shout over that freeway. Sometimes it helps a little. But the freeway keeps running.

Hypnotherapy does something different. It goes in and places traffic cones in one lane at a time — ten lanes down to nine, then eight, then seven — until that old freeway is just a quiet, narrow path. And while that's happening, we're simultaneously building brand-new neural pathways — new roads — that become your default over time.

That's not a slow process. Most clients feel a real shift within the first one to three sessions. Some notice it immediately. It tends to surprise people — which, again, favorite reaction.

What actually happens in a session

A hypnotherapy session with me typically moves through a few natural phases. There's no script, no rigid formula — it's calibrated to you. But here's the general shape of it:

1. We talk first. Before any hypnosis happens, we spend time understanding what's going on for you — what you're experiencing, what you've tried, and most importantly, how you want to feel instead. This isn't just intake paperwork. It's where I start to understand the specific shape of your pattern.

2. You relax — deeply. I guide you into a comfortable, relaxed state using calming language and imagery. This is the hypnotic state — and it feels a lot like that lovely, floaty feeling you have just before falling asleep. You're aware of everything. You could open your eyes and end the session at any moment. You just won't want to, because it feels genuinely good.

3. We do the actual work. In this relaxed state, your subconscious becomes more receptive. Depending on what you're working on, this might involve visiting a memory and transforming how it feels, building new emotional responses to triggers that have been running your life, or installing new beliefs and patterns that support who you actually want to be. I use a combination of clinical hypnotherapy, Ericksonian techniques, CBT principles, and — when it fits — elements of parts therapy. The approach is always tailored to you.

4. You leave with something. Every session ends with grounding — coming back to the room, integrating what shifted, and leaving with a clear sense of what changed and what's next. Most clients leave feeling lighter than when they arrived. Some leave a little emotional — in the good, cathartic way. A few leave a bit quiet and need a moment to process. All of that is normal and completely fine.

How hypnotherapy is different from traditional therapy

This comes up a lot, and it's worth addressing directly — especially if you've already done therapy and are wondering why you're still stuck.

Traditional talk therapy is genuinely valuable. It helps you understand your patterns, process your experiences, and develop insight. But insight alone doesn't always create change. You can understand exactly why you do something and still keep doing it. That's not a personal failing — it's the nature of subconscious programming. Understanding lives in the conscious mind. The pattern lives somewhere else.

Hypnotherapy goes to where the pattern actually lives. Instead of talking about the anxiety, we work directly with the subconscious response that creates it. Instead of understanding the belief that says you're not enough, we transform it at the root.

That's why clients who've spent years in therapy often notice changes in hypnotherapy within the first few sessions. It's not that therapy failed. It's that they were working on different levels of the same thing.

Here's a quick comparison:

  • Talk therapy: works on the conscious mind, builds understanding and insight, valuable for processing and meaning-making

  • Hypnotherapy: works on the subconscious mind, transforms patterns at the root, often creates faster and more lasting change in automatic responses

  • Both together: often the most powerful combination — which is why hypnotherapy works well alongside, not instead of, other support you may be receiving

What hypnotherapy can help with

Clinical hypnotherapy is effective across a wide range of challenges — mental health, personal growth, and professional development. Here's what I work with most:

Mental health & emotional wellbeing

  • Depression and low mood

  • Trauma and PTSD — including complex trauma from childhood

  • Grief and loss

  • Stress and burnout

  • Sleep issues and insomnia

  • Shame, guilt, and chronic self-criticism

Personal growth & confidence

  • Low self-esteem and self-worth

  • Imposter syndrome

  • Fear of failure or success

  • Building genuine, lasting confidence

Professional & career

  • Playing small — holding back visibility, undercharging, over-delivering

  • Public speaking and presentation anxiety

  • Money mindset and pricing confidence

  • Leadership presence

  • Visibility fear — on camera, in meetings, in pitches

Habits & lifestyle

  • Smoking cessation

  • Emotional eating and weight management

  • Focus and motivation

Things people wonder before their first session

Will I be unconscious or out of control?

No. You're aware of everything throughout the session. You could stop at any moment. The hypnotic state is simply deep relaxation with focused attention — closer to a guided meditation than anything you've seen in a movie.

What if I can't be hypnotized?

Almost everyone can experience hypnosis. The ability to enter a hypnotic state is essentially the ability to relax and follow guided imagery — which most people can do just fine. The clients who are initially most skeptical are often the ones who go deepest, because their analytical minds engage fully with the process once they understand it.

What if something comes up that's too difficult to handle?

I'm trained in trauma-informed approaches, which means we never push faster than your nervous system is ready to go. If something difficult arises, we work with it gently — or we set it aside entirely and return to it when you're ready. You're always in the driver's seat.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients notice meaningful change within one to three sessions. For deeper or longer-standing patterns — complex trauma, burnout, ingrained professional blocks — a handful of sessions typically creates lasting transformation. I'll always give you an honest sense of what I think will serve you best after our first conversation.

Can I do this virtually?

Yes — and it works just as well. Since the pandemic, research has confirmed that virtual hypnotherapy sessions via Zoom are equally effective as in-person. I work with clients in San Diego in person and with clients across California, the US, and worldwide via Zoom.

I've tried everything. Why would this be different?

Because everything you've tried was probably working on the conscious mind — the 10% that knows better. Hypnotherapy works on the subconscious — the 90% that's actually running the show. It's not that the other approaches didn't work. It's that they weren't reaching the level where the pattern lives. That's the difference.
