I know- shame and guilt sucks. It may be that years of repeated messages that you should feel a certain way about things, or should do certain things, otherwise you'll be letting people down and you should therefore feel bad about it. In reality, shame and guilt are human emotions, but on the grand scheme of things don't serve a good purpose. Going unchecked, repeated cycles of shame and guilt can lead to depression and anxiety, and that helps no one at all. Sure, being aware of how your actions affect others is a good thing to do. However, to repeatedly feel bad about something you did or did not do in the past serves no good purpose. If you can fix the thing, somehow make amends and/or somehow make it better, then great! Do so! If you can and should apologize, then great, do so! And then move on. Holding on to shame and guilt serves no useful purpose, neither for you nor those around you.
