Depression stems from both psychological and physiological factors, and it can be treated. For some, healing may be gradual and may take time, but you can make noticeable progress with a few key steps. Therapy such as hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy make a big difference. The right therapy helps a person with depression to understand the source(s) of depression, and address those issues by reframing them in a healthier way.
When you reframe and heal issues at the subconscious level, the healing goes deeper and lasts longer. Environmental and physiological factors also contribute to (and can exacerbate) feelings of depression. By addressing these factors, as well by getting help from a trained therapist, you can experience remarkable relief. For some people, medication like anti-depressants can help. Anti-depressants aren't for everybody and sometimes come with side-affects, so check with a psychiatrist to see if they're right for you.
Imagine a wonderful journey of the mind- like a movie that you and your hypnotherapist co-write. Most people who come to me who experience feelings of depression feel noticeably better after the first session, and dramatically better after just a few sessions. Often, people are shocked at much they process and address in the first session, and how they not only start feeling happier, but also find themselves doing more things to live a richer life after a few sessions.
A study conducted by Alfred A. Barrios, Ph.D., surveyed scientific literature, where he compared recovery rates for various types of therapy. He found that hypnotherapy had a 93% recovery rate after an average of 6 sessions. This was compared to a 38% recovery rate after approximately 600 sessions for psychoanalysis and a 72% recovery rate after an average of 22 sessions for behavior therapy. The study was titled "Hypnotherapy: A Reappraisal" and was published in Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice.

It is important to release the unresolved feelings as soon as possible after the triggering event because if left unaddressed, they can become deeply buried and contribute to ongoing depression. Releasing these feelings allows for healing, prevents them from manifesting as self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors, and makes room for healthy growth!
If the unresolved feelings are not released, they continue to be deeply buried- within the subconscious mind- numbed and ignored by different factors. While the unresolved feelings are "numbed" or buried, it does not mean that they're not affecting you; chances are, they are leading to self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors. As the unresolved feelings continue to ruminate and cycle continuously through your mind, it can contribute to ongoing depression.
These unresolved feelings become deeply buried beneath the numbness created by anti-depressant drugs, addictive behaviors (think: binge-watching tv or social media; over-spending; drinking, drugs etc.), and repression when they are not released or addressed. The use of anti-depressant drugs, addictive behaviors, and repression further contributes to the suppression of these emotions.
Hypnotherapy removes the underlying basis of depression by addressing and releasing the stored unhealthy emotions and unresolved feelings. Through the process of hypnotherapy, these emotions and feelings are brought to the surface and processed & transformed into something that serves you better. This then allows for resolution of past issues, dramatic relief from depression, and makes both space and foundation for upbeat feelings like hope, overall contentment and a further zest for life..

It goes without saying that everybody’s circumstances are unique, and we know that your story (and your mental health) is like nobody else’s. So how can Healing You Hypnotherapy help you to overcome depression? To start with, hypnotherapy is guided hypnosis, and is a lot like meditation with a goal. More-precisely, it’s like having a very relaxed conversation with your eyes closed. It's also an outpatient treatment, usually done virtually. (We do not do inpatient treatment).
Did you know that about 10% of who you are and what you do on a day-to-day basis (included feeling depressed) comes from your conscious mind, and 90% of who you are and what you do is driven by your subconscious mind? It’s true! So if that’s the case, then the memories, beliefs and behaviors that drive you (and me!) lie in our subconscious minds. That includes all of the memories, thought-loops, beliefs and behaviors that lead to depression having such a big hold on people. It really is what has such a big effect on our overall mental health.
What we, as hypnotherapists, do, is help you to relax down to your subconscious mind (while you remain fully-aware, and fully in control) and help get rid of those depressing superhighway thought loops (no judgment here- we all have some of these!). We shrink down the gravity and enormity of these negative superhighways driving our minds, and increase (or lay anew) thought-loop super-highways that serve you better. You know-we start laying more superhighways in your brain of optimistic thoughts, grateful thoughts, thoughts that allow you to appreciate yourself and your accomplishments (we know- you probably don’t let yourself acknowledge how far you have come, and we’re gonna change that!). And then, the more we shrink down the impact of those negative thought-loops and previously-automatic behaviors that reinforce depression, the quicker you overcome depression, and the quicker your overall mental health improves.
Ok, so we don’t have an exact answer here. However, what we’ve found is that people typically experience a drastic improvement after just a few sessions. After 6 sessions or so, people are generally feeling much better, and asking to focus on other topics (including mental health topics like decreasing anxiety, and increasing self-esteem, improving focus or the ability to learn, getting better at attracting wealth, improving relationships and more).
Again, everybody’s journey is a little different, especially when it comes to treating depression and replacing it with hope, optimism, joy, ambition and living a fuller life.
Typically, initial sessions last around 90 minutes, so that we can get some more details about how depression is affecting your life, what other mental health challenges might be affecting you, and how you want to feel instead. Then, we’re going to give you some very powerful tools to keep improving how you feel (and reducing feelings of depression) after you finish your sessions with us. Next, we do some very powerful healing work through this guided hypnosis. Most of our clients report feeling so much better after the first session! Then, in sessions 2-6, the healing is multiplied.
We’ve had people report that they’ve spent $10,000’s on other therapists, for years, and improved their mental health only a little. And then, after a few sessions with us doing hypnotherapy, they report feeling their depression lift. Even if you have major depression, it can be highly-treatable with the right mental health treatment. And thankfully, the stigma around mental illness is decreasing as it is increasingly recognized as illness that can and should be treated (instead of it being a flaw of a person) If you have a major depressive disorder, you may want to get diagnosed by a psychiatrist first. Again, while we are not psychiatrists and we do not diagnose mental health disorders or mental illness. Prior to the pandemic, most hypnotherapy happened in-person. However, when lock-downs started becoming a mandate and the world was doing what it could to slow the spread of Covid, we started doing all hypnotherapy via phone and/or via video conference. Also, the awareness of mental health and mental illness became greater and recognized as being more common (and "more-okay" to seek depression treatment). And do you know what we found?
It’s just as effective as in-person hypnotherapy in reducing feelings of depression, and helping people to overcome depression! It's also just as effective at improving overall mental heath!
So really, while the world continues to figure out what’s safe and what’s not, we continue to offer hypnotherapy sessions via phone or video chat. When appropriate, we’ll do hypnotherapy sessions in person again (in the San Diego CA area).
Another great part of conducting hypnotherapy over the phone or via video chat is that:
1. We can serve anyone, anywhere!
2. You don’t have to drive to come to us.
3. You can show up to a session in a ball gown, or pajamas, or anything in between!
Not surprisingly, many studies show that most people with substance abuse issues- drugs or alcohol- have underlying mental health or mental illness issues. This includes things like depression and anxiety. We are not a substance abuse clinic and do not treat substance abuse directly. However, because we do successfully treat depression, anxiety and similar mental health challenges, this often (in turn) helps with substance abuse. Please note- if you have a serious substance abuse issue, we still recommend you work with a facility that specifically treats substance abuse issues and or one of the very fine residential treatment centers in or near San Diego.
